The new football season is off to a good start, and the Clear Brook Wolverines are ready to play, as the team prepares for district play this weekend.

The Wolverines worked really hard during the offseason and it showed in their 56-27 season-opening win against Bellaire High School.

There have been many changes to the team this year, including several new coaches who were brought in during the off-season – additions which have really made a difference.

Head Football Coach Mike Allison said that he thinks all the new coaches will be bringing a lot of energy to the players this year.

“I think it just brings a new energy to the program and I think these guys are very enthusiastic and I’m hoping that they will be very positive and very helpful to the players but they are all coming from a system that I’m used to and used to coach in and I think that will help implement the system that I’m trying to put in here at Clear Brook,” said Allison.

Along with additions to the coaching staff, there is also a new defense that the team will be using this year. Although it is not much different from what they did last year, the team is hoping it can do the trick for them this season.

Defensive Line Coach BJ Durant has said that the hardest part of teaching a new defense to the guys was just learning what some of the terms mean.

“I think just getting everybody used to the terminology and the new alignments and the new assignments and stuff. It’s not a lot different from what we did in the past it’s just all the vocabulary and verbiage and everything is different,” said Durant.

The Seniors on the varsity squad this year have adapted well to all of the changes that have been made this season. Although they have new coaches and a new system, they still know what it takes to be a leader to the younger guys on the team. A lot of them are going to be playing a huge role for the team this season.

Coach Allison has said that this year’s Seniors will be able to play better because they have more experience under the coaching system.

“I think that the seniors this year will probably be able to perform a little better just because it is their second year in our system. Some of them may not have the varsity experience, but they have the experience within our system,” said Allison.

The Wolverines have faced several new teams this season including Bellaire and South Houston, which the Wolverines beat soundly.

Alvin High School is also new to the schedule and will be replacing Brazoswood as a district opponent. The game against Alvin will be an away game and will be their ninth game of the season.

The coaching staff has been working hard this offseason to get into a position to win, and the season has already started off to a good start, and the playoffs are in their sights.
